From the City Manager
Mary Neilan
Construction Zone Ahead, Proceed with Caution!
If you live in Belvedere, you can’t help but notice the utility project underway on San Rafael Ave. PG&E has embarked on a Gas Line Replacement Project, a safety improvement they have undertaken in many communities. In our City they will be replacing 2,300 feet of 4” gas main, located under San Rafael Ave. between Windward and Leeward.
As you can see, the impact of this on local traffic and parking is significant. Not to mention the occasional disruption in service (not just PG&E but any other utility that gets disturbed during construction). We appreciate your patience! The project is expected to conclude in March.
The slurry seal project (street paving) that occurred this year on a number of streets in Belvedere avoided San Rafael Ave. because we had been told this project was in the works. Now that it’s underway, we will include a resurfacing project on San Rafael Ave. in next year’s budget and eliminate the “patchwork” look we have had for several years. The colored markings you see will fade over time.
But wait! There’s more!
Marin Municipal Water District is also doing a major project, replacing the water main on a number of streets: Bayview (from Golden Gate to Marin), Oak (from Golden Gate to Laurel), Laurel, Acacia, San Rafael Avenue (from Beach to Laurel) and Beach Road (from 172 Beach to Bayview) will all be impacted at some point over the next few months. Larger water mains improve flow for domestic as well as fire safety purposes, improving both safety and reliability.
Residents here are accustomed to street closures for private construction projects, but the City tries to manage those requests to minimize disruption. In this case, the utilities set the schedule and have the right to do so. So we will do what we can to facilitate their projects in hopes that they complete their work in record time!
Please join us at the annual Town Hall Meeting
Monday evening, January 26, the City Council will honor the 2014 Citizen of the Year, John Telischak. John served two terms on the City Council and was twice appointed Mayor. While on the council he represented Belvedere on numerous committees, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Finance Committee and the General Plan Update Steering Committee. John joins an impressive list of past recipients of the Citizen of the Year award. Hard to imagine what Belvedere would be like without their contributions! Come and help us thank John for all his service.
There will also be a brief presentation at the meeting from staff on City projects, issues and what we are looking forward to in the coming year. We hope to see you all there!

Marin Master Gardeners Presents: Water Wise Edible Gardening
February 4, 2015
10 AM – 11 AM
Landmarks Art and Garden Center
841 Tiburon Blvd.
Reducing water usage in your edible garden will not only save you money, but conserves one of our most important natural resources. Many residential gardeners are asking: “How can I grow an edible garden and save water too?”
Master Gardener Gael Perrin will talk about the most important things you could be doing now to save water and protect your established plants. She also will discuss how to plan your future edible gardens with strategies that will reduce water consumption this year and in the years to come.
Gael comes from a long line of gardeners and has been playing in the dirt since she was a child. While earning a degree in geology at the University of California Santa Cruz, she studied organic farming and gardening in the horticulture program started by English Master Gardener Alan Chadwick. She has managed an apple farm, grown edibles for retail sale, and with her design background, loves to create gardens that are functional and beautiful.
Please visit the Marin Master Gardeners website for more information.
Save the dates: March 4 and April 1--Master Gardener talks from 10 to 11 a.m., Landmarks Art & Garden Center.
