From the City Manager
Mary Neilan
A New Mayor in Belvedere
Each July, the City Council selects a new Mayor and Vice Mayor from among their ranks to serve during the upcoming year. The custom in Belvedere is for the Vice Mayor to rotate into the Mayor’s seat, a procedure typical in smaller cities and one that allows each Council Member to “take their turn” as Mayor.
At the July 11, 2016, regular City Council meeting, James Campbell, who has been serving as Vice Mayor since last July, was elected Mayor by his Council colleagues. Mayor Campbell was first appointed to the Council in February 2013 to fill a vacancy and was then reelected to a full four-year term beginning July 2014. Prior to his time on the Council, Mayor Campbell served on the Marin Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District Board from 2008-2011, the Belvedere Parks and Open Space Committee from 2009-2011, and the Belvedere Planning Commission from 2011-2013. Currently Mayor Campbell serves as the representative and Council liaison to various local and regional committees, commission, and JPAs, including the Belvedere Historic Preservation Committee, the Belvedere Parks and Open Space Committee, the Community Development Block Grant Priority Setting Committee and the Transportation Authority of Marin Safe Routes to School Program. An avid community volunteer, Mayor Campbell also contributes his time and expertise to the Belvedere Community Foundation, the Belvedere Block Captains Program, and Marin Master Gardeners.
James Campbell takes over as Mayor from Claire McAuliffe who completed her term as Mayor but remains on the Council. Taking over the position of Vice Mayor from James is Marty Winter who has served on the Council since July 2014. Congratulations to James and Marty!
Welcome New Council Member Nancy Kemnitzer
Also at their July 11, 2016, regular meeting, the City Council adopted a resolution declaring the results of the June 7, 2016, election. Council Members Bob McCaskill and Claire McAuliffe were both reelected to serve their second four-year terms on the Council. Nancy Kemnitzer was elected to her first term, taking the seat of Sandy Donnell who had completed her two terms (eight years!) on the Council.

Nancy Kemnitzer is no stranger to the Council Chambers at City Hall, having previously served on the Planning Commission for ten years. A 30 year resident of Belvedere, Nancy and husband Bryan raised their two children, Kristin and Christopher, here. With a B.A. from Stanford University and a J.D. from U.C. Hastings College of Law, Nancy has been a practicing lawyer since 1981 and is a partner in the San Francisco Office of Kemnitzer, Barron & Krieg. Welcome Nancy!
