From the Mayor

 May 1st we welcome our new City Manager, Craig Middleton, to our Belvedere family. Middleton led the transformation of the Presidio, San Francisco from Army post to national park. As executive director of the Presidio Trust for fourteen years, he was responsible for the operation of all the departments of a small “city,” including public safety, planning and preservation, community relations, resource preservation, facilities and infrastructure. Prior to his work with the Trust, Middleton worked with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the non-profit partner of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. There, he led a team that assisted Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi in drafting and advocating for legislation to establish the Presidio Trust. Middleton previously served as Washington press secretary and legislative aide to Nancy Pelosi. We are all very excited for Craig’s first day with the City!
We will also be saying farewell to our extraordinary Interim City Manager, Beth Pollard. Beth took over the helm at City Hall in January of this year bringing more than 30 years of experience in local government which Belvedere put to good use. I know I speak for the Council, our city staff, and the citizens of Belvedere, when I express our gratitude to Beth for her wisdom and guidance during our transition between City managers.
In preparation for his new position, Craig Middleton met with Interim City Manager Pollard as well as former City Managers Ed San Diego and Mary Neilan.

City Receives Government Finance Officers Association’s Award
 The City of Belvedere was recently awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. The City has received the award for four consecutive years, thanks to the outstanding work of our Administrative Services Director, Becky Eastman. We will miss Becky and her expertise when she retires in July after 16 years in Belvedere.

Welcome New Officer Michael J. Blasi
Michael Blasi was sworn in as an officer for the Belvedere Police Department at the April 11, 2017, regular City Council meeting. Michael Blasi comes to us from the Marin County Sheriff's Office. He had assignments as a Sergeant in custody and patrol. He was assigned to the Sheriff's Office patrol boat that worked in the Richardson Bay. He was also was a detective investigating both property and person crimes. Prior to being hired at the Sheriff's Office, Mike spent 8 years in the Coast Guard. He joined the Coast Guard because of the humanitarian aspect of that branch of the service. He was also intrigued by the Law Enforcement aspect that the Coast Guard offered. Mike was raised in the Boston area and currently lives in Novato.

May 10, 2017, is National Bike to School Day. Please consider leaving the car parked and bike, bus, walk, or carpool to school. Bike trains will meet at the following locations and times:

PG&E Urges Customers to Use New 811express.com to Request free Utility Markings Before Digging
In honor of National Safe Digging Month this April, PG&E encourages everyone planning excavation projects big and small to get a free safe-digging ticket using the new and convenient tool: 811express.com. Customers, excavators and contractors are urged to take just one minute and use the online service on desktop, mobile phone or tablet at least two days prior to excavation. Utilities will be dispatched to the site to mark underground utility lines so that unsafe digging threatening gas and underground services can be avoided.
Customers and excavators can still make a free call to 811 to request underground utility markings. The two-day business requirement applies.
About the 811 Free Safety Service
811 is a free nationwide service that sends utilities to mark the presence of underground lines, including gas, electric, water and fiber optic services. Underground Service Alert (USA) North, which operates 811 in PG&E’s service area, created 811express.com to reduce demand to the 811 call line and provide a convenient way for the public to request utility markings.
Homeowners and contractors can prevent gas leaks and power outages while protecting themselves and the safety of their community by requesting a USA ticket. Contractors are required by law to contact 811 at least two working days prior to excavation, but any digging project should prompt a request for a USA ticket, including planting a tree in the yard or setting posts for a picket fence. In addition to creating a possible safety hazard, failing to contact 811 may result in costly fines and project delays.

Friday Nights on Main are a much loved community tradition. Main Street in Tiburon is closed to traffic for the evening and local restaurants set up tables and food booths outside, creating a warm and inviting venue in which to enjoy live music and wine & dine al fresco. These fun filled evenings are a great opportunity to mingle with friends and family while enjoying the beauty of Tiburon.
Friday Nights on Main take place on the last Friday of May through September, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The 207 schedule will be:

The Rotary Club of Tiburon-Belvedere invites the community to attend a 50/50 Day event, 4:45 to 6:15 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, in the Founders’ Room at the Belvedere Tiburon Library. The event will include a screening of Mill Valley Filmmaker Tiffany Shlain’s short film, 50/50: Rethinking the Past, Present and Future of Women + Power, with a guided discussion of ways to achieve a gender-balanced world and live streaming of a Global Livecast Q & A to follow. More than 4,000 screenings are taking place in 41 states and 31 countries, so it’s an opportunity to be part of worldwide movement that’s gaining momentum. If you’re a woman or have a mother, daughter or sister, join the conversation and share your point of view.
