2011 Golf Header.jpgGolf Tournament Next Month - Sign-up to Play!

Below is an article on the 2011 Belvedere-Tiburon Open encouraging your participation - I agree!  This annual event benefits a different community non-profit each year.  The event typically rotates between the Library, Landmarks, and Recreation.  These organizations have come to depend upon the tournament as a fundraising opportunity to "close the gap" in programs and services offered to the community.

This year's beneficiary is the Belvedere-Tiburon Library.  Funds from the Golf Tournament will be used in support of essential library services, particularly for young children.   We received a tremendous response to sponsorships (see the list below), but to make this tournament really successful (and truthfully, a whole lot fun), we need players and raffle prizes.  We've received a number of generous donations for raffle gifts, but we still need more.  Check out the article below and sign-up to play in this annual tradition!

Generous Sponsors of the 2011 Tournament Include:

  • Mill Valley Refuse Services
  • Belvedere Community Foundation
  • IDEAL Restoration
  • Wulff, Hansen & Co. | Jones Hall
  • Code Source
  • WK McLellan Co.
  • Rob Epstein, City Attorney
  • EHDD Architecture
  • Tiburon Lodge
  • Tiburon Peninsula Foundation
  • The ARK Newspaper
  • ILS Associates | Smith Denison
  • Bill Smith | Frank Howard Allen Realtors
  • Ireland Robinson Hadley
  • Trustees of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library Foundation
  • Belvedere Land Company
  • Directors of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library Agency
  • The Hanna Group | CSW/Stuber-Stroeh Engineering Group
  • Servino's Ristorante | Cafe Acri
  • Colver | Bradley | Johnson | Osenton | Guzzardo

A big thank you to these generous sponsors!

CalTrans Work on Tiburon Boulevard
CalTransBeginning Sunday Night - August 22

Caltrans will be embarking on a much appreciated project to repave Tiburon Blvd (State Route 131) from Mar West St. to Main St.  The $1.15M project will begin, Sunday, August 22. The project will consist of some day shifts, such as concrete work and traffic signal upgrades at the Beach Road intersection. However, the bulk of the grinding and paving work will be in the evenings from 7 PM to 6 AM with noisy operations restricted between 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM. The work week will start on Sunday evening and end Friday morning. The approximate completion date is September 30, barring any major incidents or inclement weather. The roadway should be passable at all times in both directions during this work.

Caltrans will place an electronic message sign near Mar West St. to inform inbound traffic of the upcoming project 2 weeks prior to the start. Flyers to businesses and residences near the project limits will be handed out one to two weeks prior to construction. Please call Christopher Blunk of Caltrans at 415-257-4844 if you have any questions.

Celebrating the Chinese Immigration via the PS China
China CabinMonth of the China Cabin - September 2011
China Cabin, Belvedere

An upcoming historic exhibit at Belvedere Tiburon Landmarks Society’s “China Cabin” will tell the story of the 30,000 Chinese immigrants who traveled on the P.S. China from Hong Kong to San Francisco in the 1800s. Their contribution to the development and growth of California and the entire U.S. is of major significance.

The different exhibits, including artifacts, paintings, and posters of the era, will highlight not only the epic journey, but also three areas of contribution to California and the U.S. - Agriculture, Mining, and Railroad development.  Starting in 1866, the Pacific Mail built wooden steamers, such as the PS China, to fulfill their mail contract. These ships sailed a route to the Far East and back delivering mail. As well, on the outbound voyage, the black-hulled ships carried 2,000 to 2,800 pounds of famed California flour as well as money - gold and silver bars and Mexican and U.S. Trade Dollars. The return trips brought back rice, tea, silk and general Chinese goods and the immigrants.

While earlier ships had brought over limited immigrants, during the late 1800s over 30,000 Chinese immigrants made the long and arduous 18-day voyage. Chinese passengers at $40 steerage brought in good revenue, approximately $32,000 sailing to Hong Kong and $40,000 from immigrants sailing to San Francisco. Beginning in 1867 about 75 Chinese crewed these wooden titans.

The exhibit will be presented at the restored China Cabin, once the elegant social hall of the paddle steamer China that sailed between San Francisco and the Far East starting in the 1860s. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the restoration and opening of the China Cabin to the public. A private event, which will include distinguished guests from the consulate of the People's Republic of China, will kick off the exhibit on September 1; subsequently the China Cabin will be open to the general public every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1-4pm throughout September. The China Cabin is located at 52 Beach Road in Belvedere, California.

The Belvedere Tiburon Landmarks Society manages and maintains Old St. Hilary Landmarks and the surrounding wildflower preserve, Landmarks Art & Garden Center, the China Cabin, and the Railroad Ferry & Depot Museum. The Landmarks History Collection includes photographs, fine art, artifacts, maps, documents, and a reference library. The Landmarks sites are open to the general public from April through October each year.

2011 Belvedere Community Foundation Photo Contest!
snapshot.jpgApplications Must Be Received by: October 30

Whether you are looking back on Belvedere from your sailboat on the bay or looking down on the Tiburon Peninsula from atop Saint Hillary’s open space, there is no denying we live in one of the most beautiful and photogenic places on earth. For nearly a decade, the Belvedere Community Foundation has been inviting professional and amateur photographers alike to share their most captivating images of our home in their annual photography contest. This year, for the tenth anniversary of the photography contest, the Belvedere Community Foundation is trying a completely new format.

“Before entrants had to have the photos printed, matted and mailed to the contest headquarters” explains contest co-chair Jeffery Stein, “Now the contest is completely online, just go to the Belvedere Community Foundation website, register for the contest, and upload your images. We wanted to make the contest easy for everyone to participate in but if you are not comfortable using the computer, we can get your photos into our online gallery.”

The categories of for the photographs are -
• Celebrating the Beauty and Spirit of Belvedere and Tiburon
• Smartphone Photos of the Tiburon Peninsula
• Life on the Tiburon Peninsula for Ages 5-18

“Ansel Adams spent some time taking black and white photos on the Tiburon Peninsula during the 1950’s, but entries can be color, sepia, or black and white.” adds James Campbell the other contest co chair. “I am really curious to see what kinds of photos are entered in the Smartphone category. My neighbor showed me a picture she took on her phone of a wet coyote sitting on the San Rafael Avenue seawall.”

The contest is already open and accepting photographs, all submissions must be received by October 30, 2011. A panel of judges will determine a winner in each of the three categories. “There will also be a People’s Choice Award determined by community voting on our website”, Jeffery Stein points out “so even if you don’t submit photos, visit the Photography Contest on the Foundation website to vote for your favorites.”

“We are having our kick off party on September 7, 2011 at Belvedere City Hall but I hope there are lots of entries before then, we already have a good start” states Campbell “the awards presentation will happen November 16, 2011 during the Belvedere Community Foundation annual meeting. Prizes will be delicious meals at the Caprice, Sam’s, Servino’s and Waypoint Pizza.
