2011 Golf Header.jpgGolf Tournament Just 3 weeks away!  Sign-up to Play!

In the news below is an article on the 2011 Belvedere-Tiburon Open encouraging your participation - I agree!  This annual event benefits a different community non-profit each year.  The event typically rotates between the Library, Landmarks, and Recreation.  These organizations have come to depend upon the tournament as a fundraising opportunity to "close the gap" in programs and services offered to the community.

This year's beneficiary is the Belvedere-Tiburon Library.  Funds from the Golf Tournament will be used in support of essential library services, particularly for young children.   We received a tremendous response to sponsorships (see the list below), but to make this tournament really successful (and truthfully, a whole lot fun), we need players and raffle prizes.  We've received a number of generous donations for raffle gifts, but we still need more.  Check out the article below for sign-up forms and sign-up to play in this annual tradition!

Generous Sponsors of the 2011 Tournament Include:

  • Mill Valley Refuse Services
  • Belvedere Community Foundation
  • IDEAL Restoration
  • Wulff, Hansen & Co. | Jones Hall
  • Code Source
  • WK McLellan Co.
  • Rob Epstein, City Attorney
  • EHDD Architecture
  • Tiburon Lodge
  • Tiburon Peninsula Foundation
  • The ARK Newspaper
  • ILS Associates | Smith Denison
  • Bill Smith | Frank Howard Allen Realtors
  • Ireland Robinson Hadley
  • Trustees of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library Foundation
  • Belvedere Land Company
  • Directors of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library Agency
  • The Hanna Group | CSW/Stuber-Stroeh Engineering Group
  • Servino's Ristorante | Cafe Acri
  • Colver | Bradley | Johnson | Osenton | Guzzardo

A big thank you to these generous sponsors!

Sincerely,

Celebrating the Chinese Immigration via the PS China
China CabinMonth of the China Cabin - September 2011
China Cabin, Belvedere

Opening in September is a historic exhibit at Belvedere Tiburon Landmarks Society’s “China Cabin” telling the story of the 30,000 Chinese immigrants who traveled on the P.S. China from Hong Kong to San Francisco in the 1800s. Their contribution to the development and growth of California and the entire U.S. is of major significance.

The different exhibits, including artifacts, paintings, and posters of the era, will highlight not only the epic journey, but also three areas of contribution to California and the U.S. - Agriculture, Mining, and Railroad development.  Starting in 1866, the Pacific Mail built wooden steamers, such as the PS China, to fulfill their mail contract. These ships sailed a route to the Far East and back delivering mail. As well, on the outbound voyage, the black-hulled ships carried 2,000 to 2,800 pounds of famed California flour as well as money - gold and silver bars and Mexican and U.S. Trade Dollars. The return trips brought back rice, tea, silk and general Chinese goods and the immigrants.

While earlier ships had brought over limited immigrants, during the late 1800s over 30,000 Chinese immigrants made the long and arduous 18-day voyage. Chinese passengers at $40 steerage brought in good revenue, approximately $32,000 sailing to Hong Kong and $40,000 from immigrants sailing to San Francisco. Beginning in 1867 about 75 Chinese crewed these wooden titans.

The exhibit will be presented at the restored China Cabin, once the elegant social hall of the paddle steamer China that sailed between San Francisco and the Far East starting in the 1860s. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the restoration and opening of the China Cabin to the public. A private event, which will include distinguished guests from the consulate of the People's Republic of China, will kick off the exhibit on September 1; subsequently the China Cabin will be open to the general public every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1-4pm throughout September. The China Cabin is located at 52 Beach Road in Belvedere, California.

The Belvedere Tiburon Landmarks Society manages and maintains Old St. Hilary Landmarks and the surrounding wildflower preserve, Landmarks Art & Garden Center, the China Cabin, and the Railroad Ferry & Depot Museum. The Landmarks History Collection includes photographs, fine art, artifacts, maps, documents, and a reference library. The Landmarks sites are open to the general public from April through October each year.
