2012 Belvedere Community Foundation Photo Contest
The Peninsula online photo contest is underway.
Whether
you are looking back on Belvedere from your sailboat on the bay or
looking down on the Tiburon Peninsula from atop Saint Hillary’s open
space, there is no denying we live in one of the most beautiful and
photogenic places on earth. For the past decade, the Belvedere Community
Foundation has been inviting professional and amateur photographers
alike to share their most captivating images of our home in their annual
photography contest. For the eleventh year of the photography contest
we have six categories to submit photos under:
- Architecture of the Tiburon Peninsula
- Events on the Tiburon Peninsula
- Wildlife on the Peninsula
- Views of Belvedere and the Tiburon Peninsula
- People of the Tiburon Peninsula
- Life in Tiburon and Belvedere (Entrants aged 5-18)
The
contest is open to everyone. Photographs must reflect some aspect of
the Belvedere Tiburon Peninsula in color or black and white.
- All
visitors to the Photo Contest will register to submit photos. After
users are approved, they will be able to upload their photos.
- Any photos uploaded will be previewed to ensure they are in the spirit of the contest.
- There is no fee to enter. There is a limit of 5 photographs per entrant. Photos should not be larger than 3MB in size.
The
contest is already open and accepting photographs. All submissions must
be received by October 31, 2012. A panel of judges will determine a
winner in each of the three categories. There will also be a People’s
Choice Award determined by community voting on our website so even if
you don’t submit photos, visit the Photography Contest on the Foundation
website to vote for your favorites.
To vote, please go to the gallery page and
select one of our six photo contest category galleries, then highlight
the picture you wish to vote for. Scroll down to the rating stars. To
vote, roll your cursor over the blue stars until they turn green and
click at the number of stars you wish to give to the photo.

Back to School Driving Safety
Schools are open again and the Belvedere Police Department would like to remind everyone to drive carefully, especially around the schools. The Belvedere Police Department will be providing extra patrol presence around the schools, especially around drop-off and pick-up times at Reed School due to construction in the area.
Safety tips to keep in mind when taking/picking up your child:
• Plan ahead and allow extra time to deliver your child to school
• Young children may dart into path of cars, so watch, watch, watch!
• Don’t assume that your child is safe in a crosswalk; tell them to stop and look both ways, if not accompanied by a crosswalk guard.
• Be familiar with school zones and speed limits at your child’s school.
• Do not let your cell phone, palm, or other wonders of technology distract you from the primary goal: the ultimate safety of your child and other children.
• Motorists must obey all traffic laws and speed limits.
• Be sure to stop for school buses that have stopped to load or unload passengers.
• When you are backing out of your driveway, be sure to watch for kids hurrying to school, either walking or on their bikes.
We take many things for granted in our daily routines: our jobs, families, and health. A blunder caused by rushed, careless driving could alter many lives, so slow down, and drive carefully!

September 29 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
The City of Belvedere will host a prescription drug take-back day on September 29th from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Belvedere Community Center.
Get rid of your unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications. Bring your medications for disposal to the Belvedere Community Center at 450 San Rafael Ave. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. A
Belvedere Police Officer will be available to take your medication and
have it disposed of safely. Please bring your pills, (no liquids or
creams will be accepted) in plain plastic baggies.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
Last April, Americans
turned in 552,161 pounds—276 tons—of prescription drugs at over 5,600
sites operated by the DEA and nearly 4,300 state and local law
enforcement partners. In its four previous Take Back events, DEA and
its partners took in over 1.5 million pounds—nearly 775 tons—of pills.
