Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary Waters Closed to Boat Traffic Starting Oct. 1st
Annual closure from Oct. 1 through March 31 protects important migrating bird species that use the bay for over-wintering.
Staff at the Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary are reminding the community that Sanctuary waters are closed to all boat traffic and in-water activities (including kayaks & paddleboards) from October 1st through March 31st. The closure protects tens of thousands of migratory ducks, geese, and shorebirds that use the Bay for re-fueling on their southward travels, or while they over-winter right here in on Richardson Bay.
“We are grateful for the community support and understanding regarding the importance of protecting this habitat,” said Kerry Wilcox, the Center’s Sanctuary Manager. “As the summer winds down and migratory birds start to make their way into the Bay Area, we want to spread the word that the closure is just around the corner. With the herring spawn successes of the last couple years, the number of birds in the Sanctuary is expected to be high, and it is especially important to avoid disturbing them while they feed and rest.” Over-winter health can be an especially important factor in determining reproductive success for these birds during the following summer.
The annual closure is mandated by an ordinance of the Richardson Bay Regional Agency.
Approximately 900 acres of bay waters are covered by the ordinance, extending south from the edge of the Cove housing complex to the tip of Strawberry Point, east to Belvedere and north to Blackie’s Pasture. Audubon manages this area as a wildlife sanctuary, focused on the waterbirds using the bay. The Sanctuary boundaries are designated by buoys and permanent, marked pilings.
No boats or watercraft--including non-motorized boats such as kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and sailboats--are allowed within the Sanctuary waters during this critical season for migratory birds.

San Rafael Ave Water Pipeline Replacement Project
The City has received notification from Marin Municipal Water District about an upcoming Pipeline Replacement Project on San Rafael Ave. Following 3 major waterline breaks (over a 2-3 year period) that caused damage to private property in the 200 block of San Rafael Ave, the Board of Directors at MMWD approved the replacement of the main waterline pipe on San Rafael Ave (between Golden Gate Ave and Leeward Rd). The project was awarded to WR Forde Associates and is scheduled to begin in Early October and complete before the holidays in December. Construction hours will be from 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Residents will be notified 24-48 hrs in advance of short interruptions in water service that will be necessary as the cut-over is made from the old system to the new system. City of Belvedere Public Works Staff will monitor the construction crews during the construction project.

Belvedere Community Foundation's 2nd Annual Clean and Green Day

The city of Belvedere held its first Clean and Green day last April. More than a hundred and fifty of your neighbors took part in projects spanning from the Golden Gate Avenue cul-de-sac to Tom Price Park, from one end of our beautiful city to another.
We are gearing up for our 2nd Annual Clean and Green Day October 20th and here is how you can help...
Suggest a project:
Have you passed a public spot in Belvedere and said “I wish they would do something about this”?
Send us your suggestions and we will see if we can make it happen during Clean and Green Day. Remember the area must be public and cannot require city irrigation.
Volunteer to be a Project Lead:
Project leads will know what the plan for each project site is, where to weed, sweep, prune and put the garbage. Our coordinator will provide you details prior to Clean and Green Day.
Volunteer to Help Out on Clean and Green Day:
No matter your abilities we will have a job for you on Clean and Green Day. Let us know you’ll be joining us and we’ll help you find a project in your neighborhood and let you know what tools you can bring.

Instrumental early music ensemble Voices of Music, world-famous for its outstanding online concert videos, opens its season with dazzling music from 17th century Italy, featuring renowned cornetto virtuoso Bruce Dickey. The cornetto was the most popular wind instrument during the early baroque and was considered to be the only instrument that could imitate the range, color and virtuosity of the human voice. A pioneer in the Early Music revival, and the leading exponent and virtuoso of the cornetto, Bruce Dickey has performed with all of the major early music ensembles in the world and is co-director of Concerto Palatino. Bruce will perform a selection of the signature works for the cornetto, featuring the composers Josquin des Prez, Palestrina, Dario Castello, Cipriano da Rore and Giovanni Battista Fontana, with a dazzling array of “divisions”unique ornaments in the style of the time.

2012 Belvedere Community Foundation
Photo Contest 
The Peninsula online photo contest is underway.
Whether
you are looking back on Belvedere from your sailboat on the bay or
looking down on the Tiburon Peninsula from atop Saint Hillary’s open
space, there is no denying we live in one of the most beautiful and
photogenic places on earth. For the past decade, the Belvedere Community
Foundation has been inviting professional and amateur photographers
alike to share their most captivating images of our home in their annual
photography contest. For the eleventh year of the photography contest
we have six categories to submit photos under:
- Architecture of the Tiburon Peninsula
- Events on the Tiburon Peninsula
- Wildlife on the Peninsula
- Views of Belvedere and the Tiburon Peninsula
- People of the Tiburon Peninsula
- Life in Tiburon and Belvedere (Entrants aged 5-18)
The
contest is open to everyone. Photographs must reflect some aspect of
the Belvedere Tiburon Peninsula in color or black and white.
- All
visitors to the Photo Contest will register to submit photos. After
users are approved, they will be able to upload their photos.
- Any photos uploaded will be previewed to ensure they are in the spirit of the contest.
- There is no fee to enter. There is a limit of 5 photographs per entrant. Photos should not be larger than 3MB in size.
The
contest is already open and accepting photographs. All submissions must
be received by October 31, 2012. A panel of judges will determine a
winner in each of the three categories. There will also be a People’s
Choice Award determined by community voting on our website so even if
you don’t submit photos, visit the Photography Contest on the Foundation
website to vote for your favorites.
To vote, please go to the gallery page and
select one of our six photo contest category galleries, then highlight
the picture you wish to vote for. Scroll down to the rating stars. To
vote, roll your cursor over the blue stars until they turn green and
click at the number of stars you wish to give to the photo.
