Open Space Workday, Nature Walk and Lunchplants

Saturday, Dec. 1st
Tiburon Peninsula Club
1600 Mar West St.
9am - 1pm

The first rains of the season mean we'll soon be seeing a flush of yellow French broom blossoms on local hillsides. Winter is the best time to remove this invasive plant, so on Saturday, Dec. 1, the Broom Busters of Old St. Hilary’s Open Space will host their biggest workday of the year from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will be rewarded with a good workout, a nature walk and a hearty lunch.

Participants of all ages are invited to meet in the parking lot of the Tiburon Peninsula Club (1600 Mar West St.) at 9am. Marin County Parks rangers will provide tools and direct the group in pulling broom on the open space behind the club. After a chili lunch, naturalist David Herlocker will lead a walk to point out unique features of the open space and how plants and animals benefit from habitat restoration.

The Broom Busters have been battling broom, bull thistle and other non-native plants since 1997, and they welcome new volunteers. Workdays are usually the first Saturday morning each month. The requirements are simple: “Come when you can; leave when you must.” No experience is needed.

To volunteer or to receive email announcements of future workdays, contact Faith Brown at or 435-5320.

The Belvedere Police Department Invites You to Take the Safe Driving Pledgelogo

Did you know that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children 3 and older?

Did you know that every year, distracted driving contributes to 3 million crashes in the United States?

Did you know that the percentage of children walking to school in Marin has increased from 16% in 2003 to 21% in 2008?

The Safe Driving Pledge Campaign encourages residents to drive safely while spreading the message about this program. The members of the Belvedere Police Department are asking you to join us in making the pledge.

The purpose of the Pledge campaign is to raise awareness and encourage motorists to:
- Drive within the legal speed limit on neighborhood streets.
- Share the road with pedestrians and bicyclists, be courteous, and drive safely.
- Reduce cell phone use to urgent calls only and always hands-free. Never text, use the internet, or use any other handheld devices while driving.

For more information, and to help spread the word...
