[ARCHIVED] Public Safety Power Shutoff Information




The city has been informed that high winds and heat will require a PSPS for a number of Marin communities. The PSPS will impact 19,600 customers but NONE in Tiburon and Belvedere.  Areas that will be impacted are Mill Valley (5900 customers), Fairfax (4200 customers), San Anselmo (4000 customers), Sausalito and West Marin/Stinson.  Impacted customers are being notified of the PSPS disruptions, and the PG&E website will be updated with the new information. Power will go out Sunday and will be restored by Tuesday night. This information will be updated as conditions change.

Current PSPS Information 

As part of its Community Wildfire Safety Program, PG&E is implementing a Public Safety Power Shutoff program as a precautionary measure to help reduce the risk of wildfires. If gusty winds and dry conditions, combined with a heightened fire risk, threaten a portion of the electric system serving Belvedere, it may be necessary for PG&E to turn off electricity in the interest of public safety.

While Public Safety Power Shutoffs are more likely to occur in high fire-risk areas, a shutoff could impact other areas as well and are likely to last multiple days. That’s why it is important to prepare an emergency plan and kit in advance in the event your family is affected by a power shutoff--or any other emergency.

What to expect 

If PG&E determines that a Public Safety Power Shutoff is needed due to extreme weather conditions, you can expect:

  • Early Warning Notifications - PG&E will aim to send customer alerts via phone, text, email and other means before shutting off power. Update and confirm your contact information with PG&E to receive important outage alerts at
  • Ongoing Updates - PG&E will provide ongoing updates through social media, local news outlets and their website.
  • Safety Inspections - After extreme weather has passed, PG&E will inspect the lines in affected areas before power is safely restored.
  • Power Restoration - Power outages could last multiple days depending on the severity of the weather and other factors. It is important that you and your family have an emergency preparedness plan in place.

Be Ready 

Here are some steps you can take to help prepare for a Public Safety Power Shutoff:

  • Update your contact information with PG&E and sign-up for important outage alerts at
  • Have a personal safety plan in place for every member of your household including pets.
  • Plan for any medical needs like medications that need to be refrigerated or devices that require power.
  • Build or restock your emergency supply kit with food, water, flashlights, a radio, fresh batteries, first aid supplies and cash.
  • Identify backup charging methods for phones and keep hard copies of emergency phone numbers.
  • Practice manually operating your garage door. Information here.
  • Ensure any backup generators are ready to safely operate.

Once power goes out, The City plans to open the Community Center as a relief facility for affected residents to recharge cell phone and small devices.

  • Open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the duration of the shutoff
  • Small electronic-device charging.
  • Coffee, water, indoor seating, and ice for medications.
